Rest in Heavens Peace Billy Graham

One of the jobs, in fact the first ever job I had -even though it was a long time ago- I remember so well.

In 1986 I got a job at the office of BGEA (Billy Graham Evangelistic Association) in Amsterdam working as an Office Assistant and later as a Steward at the RAI conference building. It was a job with great colleagues. Introduced by a dear friend (who is sadly long longer with us) I got a job high up in a tower block with offices (first time in an elevator). My job was to water plants at the office, amongst numerous other duties such as running errands, making coffee and cutting cake for guests, preparing mailings and much more. You can say I was the general dogsbody at the office, being able to stick my head around every corner to say hello to every colleague in the building and we had loads of fun too.

Every morning we started the working day with a gathering in the canteen to sing and pray. When all preparations for the conference were done they gave me a different job description, Steward in the main conference hall, taking care of disabled people, take them in their wheel chairs and such. It was then when I met Joni Eareckson for example, a wonderful woman with a very upbeat personality even though she was paralysed from the neck down. She demonstrated how to paint with a paint brush in her mouth and we talked briefly about our mutual interest in art. I also met George MGoola there, also disabled, who later became a good friend and pen pal. He passed away suddenly in 2001 due to complications related to a pulmonary disease.

And I also met ‘The Big Boss‘ Billy Graham himself during a mass lunch with other Stewards one day. We didn’t get a chance to talk but he thanked me for my work done at his office and he gave me a Holy Bible (an American version) signed by him on the first page. All these years I have kept these and other great memories of that time and sometimes told anekdotes to my children. And today I read in the news that Billy Graham has died and went to the Lord. He was a great evangelist, an impressive man when I met him surrounded by great people working for him. And I was part of it.
