Time traveling

Many years ago I lived in England for a few years, I am sure I have told you all about it on many occasions. Even though I love my life in The Netherlands, the love of my life my wife, and my four children and all the friends I have here, I do long to be there at times.

I think it has to do with all these great memories I have of those good time I had as a young man, being in England, having friends around me there (just as I have them around me here nowadays) and not in the least the British food. Yes, there are times I wish I could just pop over for a pint or a proper English meal.

Now when you have a problem getting there at the moment you want to be there, after all, looking from over here England isn’t exactly a walk to the Chippy, I have found a solution to cope with these feelings. I call it time traveling.

In order to be able to time travel in this (retro)perspective you need to have a few ingredients and some cooking skills. I then pick something utterly British to make for Tea of Dinner. Like this time, Apple Crumble & Custard.

Now for those who are not English, if you’re not familiar with the British kitchen you might think, Custard, what is that? Custard, my Dutch friends, is basically Vanilla Vla but with a slightly different taste. It’s lovely, you should try it.

For me, this is what makes cooking indeed like time traveling. As where you can just pop over to Tesco’s and grab whatever you want to make it – you probably don’t even realise how special it is because you grew up with this- for me these moments are little moments of sheer happiness and I do imagine I am back there and then when enjoying these things.

This time Christa helped me making the Apple Crumble, leaving the Custard to me. It’s a skill, you don’t want lumps in it after all. I am proud I learned how to make this properly in 1989 in England. Great memories!

All gone now and I am back in The Netherlands in 2018.

This is me, Leendert. I am a little bit old-fashioned and I love things from the past, old series like All Creatures Great And Small, mechanical wristwatches, bi-focal glasses and vinyl records for example. I am not keen on modern things and I often work on this old style model railway. I follow Jesus and sometimes write a poem about Him but I also write about my life. Eccentric. You can often find me in the kitchen at parties.
